If you are experiencing slowness and latency in your internet connection, here are some tips to help you have a quick fix before you queue for your ISP’s hotline and escalate the issue.
- Check if the slow connection is device-related, router related or Internet-related. If device-related, update your WiFi driver. If router-related, try resetting the router and see if the speed improves. If not, then:
- Connect your laptop or desktop straight to the modem and run a Speedtest on the connection. If the upload or download information is way below your subscription, try to reset the modem and redo the test and see if the issue persists. If yes, then take a screenshot of the result and store it for when you report this to your ISP.
- If you are using BitTorrent or other torrent sites, make sure that you finish all download tasks and quit the application. Closing the window only minimizes the program and it still runs in the background. Make sure to Exit or Quit the application. (Note that Torrent sites are not allowed in the office so beware!) Torrents consume a lot of the bandwidth plus it is usually infested with malware that also eat up your bandwidth.
- If you are in an office, make sure that you have an enterprise grade firewall in place. Not only does it provide security, most advanced firewall can prioritize bandwidth to access only work-related websites and web services.
